Read Write Inc. Phonics
Here at Tall Oaks Academy Trust, we have invested in a nationally accredited successful way of teaching synthetic phonics called Read Write Inc. Phonics (also known as RWI). This scheme was developed by Ruth Miskin, who has become one of the UK’s leading authorities on teaching children to read. She worked for many years as a head teacher, teacher trainer and consultant in phonics and literacy, and developed Read, Write Inc. as a process of teaching synthetic phonics.
Synthetic phonics is a way of teaching reading. Children are taught to read letters or groups of letters by saying the sound(s) they represent – for example the letter ‘L’ makes the sound ‘llllll’ when said. Synthetic phonics also teaches children to read words by synthesising the sounds together to make a word.
