Reading at White's Wood Academy

We know that reading is the key to accessing the wider curriculum and provides a firm basis for future success. Our staff are passionate about fostering a love of reading and recognise that it is the most crucial area of the curriculum. We have worked to establish a consistent approach to the teaching of reading.

Our philosophy and curriculum provision is underpinned by, and routed in, evidence-based theory using Rose’s Simple View of Reading to help identify specific needs in reading and ensure children have the necessary support. In addition to daily reading lessons in every class, we support early reading with daily Read, Write Inc phonics lessons to ensure that children master the phonics code.

Our Reading Challenge

Book Bingo encourages children to immerse themselves in new genres, text types and read about varied subjects as well as providing a chance to read with parents, carers and even siblings.

We celebrate every successful reader in our recognition assemblies when each child earns a line or full house. We hope that you can support this challenge at home and enjoy the challenge!
