Writing

At Mercer’s Wood Academy, we teach handwriting by linking closely with the Read, Write Inc. Phonics scheme.

Handwriting is taught progressively and begins in EYFS where children are taught single-letter formation. It is not until they are ready that children are introduced to a simple, cursive, joined handwriting style.

The documents below show the letters grouped according to how they are formed:

Writing

Read Write Inc. unites the important skills of reading & writing, speaking & listening and spelling & grammar. The children write daily, rehearsing aloud what they want to write, before using their ‘Fred Fingers’ to spell any new or tricky words. Children are taught from day one how to form letters correctly and practice handwriting every day.

Please come in and talk to your child’s class teacher if you would like any further information or advice on supporting your child with reading and phonics.
